Ada Hayden Herbarium

The Ada Hayden Herbarium has the largest collection of Iowa plants and fungi, containing over 600,000 specimens of vascular plants, bryophytes, fungi, and lichens. Functioning primarily as a research facility important for taxonomic studies (occurrence, distribution, and relationships of plants), it is also used for identifying unknown plants. Specimens are loaned to specialists at other institutions around the world to support research. Loans from other institutions allow our researchers access to other herbaria. Recently, herbaria have become a source of materials to use in molecular studies and to support basic research on biodiversity.

South London Botanical Institute

Founded in 1910 by a keen botanist, Allan Octavian Hume (1829-1912), the aims of the Institute have remained almost unchanged in 100 years. Hume's lasting contribution has been to provide an environment where those interested in plants, be they amateur or professional, may meet and develop their knowledge of plants. Linnaean Herbarium

A distinguished scientist and doctor, Carl Linnaeus developed the binomial naming system of plants and animals that we are all familiar with today and which provides the fundamental framework for knowledge of the biota of the Earth, supporting effective conservation measures and the sustainable use of biodiversity. This digital archive of unique material relating to the society's priceless collections of specimens, manuscripts and letters will enable full global access for investigation allowing researchers to rapidly check details of the specimens on-line, including morphological details and written data.

The Linnean Collections

The Linnean Society is the custodian of Linnaeus' collections, which comprises specimens of plants (14,000), fish (168), shells (1,564) and insects (3,198) acquired from the widow of Carl Linnaeus in 1784 by James Edward Smith as well as Smith's own plant (17,000 specimens) and insect (5,800) collections. The collections also include the library of Linnaeus (some 1600 volumes) and around 3000 letters and manuscripts. It is the Linnean Society's aim to make available its primary research material in digital formats to support taxonomic and conservation efforts worldwide as well as providing public pleasure and enjoyment.

The Royal Library in Copenhagen, Denmark (Danish: Det Kongelige Bibliotek), is the national library of Denmark and the university library of the University of Copenhagen. It is the largest library in the Nordic countries. It contains numerous historical treasures; all works that have been printed in Denmark since the 17th century are deposited there. Thanks to extensive donations in the past the library holds nearly all known Danish printed works back to the first Danish book, printed in 1482. Bibliotheca Alexandrina Webcast

As part of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s role as an incubator of knowledge and culture, the library hosts several hundred of lectures and conferences each year, exposing the local community to current perspectives, ideas, methodologies and initiatives taking place worldwide. In order to achieve its objectives of becoming Egypt’s window on the world and the world’s window on Egypt, the BA has found it necessary to open new methods of communication and deliverance of knowledge, thus launching the BA webcasting service.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (English: Library of Alexandria; Arabic: مكتبة الإسكندرية‎ Maktabat al-Iskandarīyah, Egyptian Arabic: [mækˈtæb(e)t eskendeˈɾejjæ]) is a major library and cultural center located on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. It is both a commemoration of the Library of Alexandria that was lost in antiquity, and an attempt to rekindle something of the brilliance that this earlier center of study and erudition represented.

Plants are a major group of life forms and include familiar organisms such as trees, herbs, shrubs, grasses, vines, ferns, mosses, and green algae. About 350,000 species of plants, defined as seed plants, bryophytes, ferns and fern allies, are estimated to exist currently. As of 2004, some 287,655 species had been identified, of which 258,650 are flowering and 15,000 bryophytes. Green plants, sometimes called metaphytes, obtain most of their energy from sunlight via a process called photosynthesis.

Shanghai Library

Shanghai Library (Simplified Chinese: 上海图书馆; Pinyin:Shànghǎi túshūguǎn) is the second largest library in China after the National Library of China in Beijing. It is located in Shanghai, China. At 24 stories and 348 feet (106 m) tall, it is one of the tallest libraries in the world. Shanghai Library merged with the Institute of Scientific and Technological Information of Shanghai (ISTIS) in October 1995. It became the first ever library in China that combines public library services with SciTech and industry information research functions. Today, it is the largest public library in China and one of the ten largest libraries in the world. It was opened to the public on December 20, 1996. Nanjing Library

Nanjing Library (Simplified Chinese: 南京图书馆 Pinyin: Nánjīng Túshūguǎn) is the third largest library in China with over 7 million items. It houses important scientific, cultural and arts literature relating to Jiangsu province and other national historical records such as ancient Chinese and foreign publications. The library contains 1.6 million ancient books and 100,000 volumes of books, documents and manuscripts (including Buddhist scriptures) dating from the Tang Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty. The Austrian National Library (German: Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, abbreviated "ÖNB" and formerly Hof-Bibliothek) is the largest library in Austria with 7.4 million items in its various collections. The library is located in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. Since 2005, some of the collections have been relocated within the baroque structure of the Palais Mollard-Clary. Interactive Agricultural Ecological Atlas

The AgroAtlas Project began in 2003. Three Russian and an American agency collaborated on the Atlas. The St. Petersburg State University Geography Department was the lead institute, preparing environmental maps, developing the GIS software, and coordinating the overall project. The N. I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry prepared maps illustrating where crops have been historically grown, and the geographic distribution maps of wild species that are related to crop species. The All-Russian Institute of Plant Protection prepared maps showing the geographic distribution of crop diseases, insect pests and weeds. The project was funded by the USDA, Agricultural Research Service, and Office of International Research Programs. The project was administrated by the International Science and Technology Center.
