Clarke Abel

Clarke Abel (c. 1789 – 24 November 1826) was a British surgeon and naturalist.

He accompanied Lord Amherst on his mission to China in 1816-17 as the embassy's chief medical officer and naturalist, on the recommendation of Sir Joseph Banks. The mission was Britain's second unsuccessful attempt to establish diplomatic relations with China and involved travelling to the capital Pekin (Beijing) and the famous botanical gardens of Fa Tee near Canton. While in China, Abel collected specimens and seeds of the plant that carries his name, Abelia chinensis, described by Banks' botanical secretary Robert Brown, "with friendly partiality". However a shipwreck and an attack by pirates on the way back to his home in Britain caused him to lose all of his specimens. Abel's Narrative of a Journey in the Interior of China, 1818, gives a detailed account of the collection's misfortunes. Fortunately, he had left some specimens with sir George Staunton at Canton, who was kind enough to return them to him; living specimens of the Chinese Abelia that we know today were introduced by Robert Fortune in 1844.^[1]

In March, 1819 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society^[2] He was also a member of the Geological Society.^[3]

Abel was the first Western scientist to report the presence of the orangutan on the island of Sumatra; the Sumatran Orangutan Pongo abelii Lesson 1827 is named for him.^[4] He went on to become the surgeon-in-chief to Lord Amherstwhen the earl was appointed Governor-general of India. Abel died at Cawnpore, India, 24 November 1826, aged 37.

The standard author abbreviation C.Abel is used to indicate this individual as the author when citing a botanical name.^[5]

Ada Hayden Herbarium

The Ada Hayden Herbarium has the largest collection of Iowa plants and fungi, containing over 600,000 specimens of vascular plants, bryophytes, fungi, and lichens. Functioning primarily as a research facility important for taxonomic studies (occurrence, distribution, and relationships of plants), it is also used for identifying unknown plants. Specimens are loaned to specialists at other institutions around the world to support research. Loans from other institutions allow our researchers access to other herbaria. Recently, herbaria have become a source of materials to use in molecular studies and to support basic research on biodiversity.

South London Botanical Institute

Founded in 1910 by a keen botanist, Allan Octavian Hume (1829-1912), the aims of the Institute have remained almost unchanged in 100 years. Hume's lasting contribution has been to provide an environment where those interested in plants, be they amateur or professional, may meet and develop their knowledge of plants. Several generations of botanists have benefited from, and contributed to, the facilities available at the Institute. The alphabetical list (formerly the List of WWW Sites of Interest to Botanists) was compiled by Anthony R. Brach. It was originally posted on TAXACOM in March 1995. The subject category list (formerly A Collection of Botany Related URLs), has been discontinued; however, we highly recommend the search engine, and Scott's Botanical Links - Subject Index. The former subject list for the IDB was created by Raino Lampinen and maintained from Autumn 1993 to the year 2000. Linnaean Herbarium

A distinguished scientist and doctor, Carl Linnaeus developed the binomial naming system of plants and animals that we are all familiar with today and which provides the fundamental framework for knowledge of the biota of the Earth, supporting effective conservation measures and the sustainable use of biodiversity. This digital archive of unique material relating to the society's priceless collections of specimens, manuscripts and letters will enable full global access for investigation allowing researchers to rapidly check details of the specimens on-line, including morphological details and written data.

The Linnean Collections

The Linnean Society is the custodian of Linnaeus' collections, which comprises specimens of plants (14,000), fish (168), shells (1,564) and insects (3,198) acquired from the widow of Carl Linnaeus in 1784 by James Edward Smith as well as Smith's own plant (17,000 specimens) and insect (5,800) collections. The collections also include the library of Linnaeus (some 1600 volumes) and around 3000 letters and manuscripts. It is the Linnean Society's aim to make available its primary research material in digital formats to support taxonomic and conservation efforts worldwide as well as providing public pleasure and enjoyment.

Shanghai Library

Shanghai Library (Simplified Chinese: 上海图书馆; Pinyin:Shànghǎi túshūguǎn) is the second largest library in China after the National Library of China in Beijing. It is located in Shanghai, China. At 24 stories and 348 feet (106 m) tall, it is one of the tallest libraries in the world. Shanghai Library merged with the Institute of Scientific and Technological Information of Shanghai (ISTIS) in October 1995. It became the first ever library in China that combines public library services with SciTech and industry information research functions. Today, it is the largest public library in China and one of the ten largest libraries in the world. It was opened to the public on December 20, 1996. Nanjing Library (Simplified Chinese: 南京图书馆 Pinyin: Nánjīng Túshūguǎn) is the third largest library in China with over 7 million items. It houses important scientific, cultural and arts literature relating to Jiangsu province and other national historical records such as ancient Chinese and foreign publications. The library contains 1.6 million ancient books and 100,000 volumes of books, documents and manuscripts (including Buddhist scriptures) dating from the Tang Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty. Interactive Agricultural Ecological Atlas

The AgroAtlas Project began in 2003. Three Russian and an American agency collaborated on the Atlas. The St. Petersburg State University Geography Department was the lead institute, preparing environmental maps, developing the GIS software, and coordinating the overall project. The N. I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry prepared maps illustrating where crops have been historically grown, and the geographic distribution maps of wild species that are related to crop species. The All-Russian Institute of Plant Protection prepared maps showing the geographic distribution of crop diseases, insect pests and weeds. The project was funded by the USDA, Agricultural Research Service, and Office of International Research Programs. The project was administrated by the International Science and Technology Center.
